Updated 14 February 2010

On 28th September we had an exciting new arrival! Our pinto mare Donna (Spanish Lady Niquelar) gave birth to a gorgeous colt foal! He was on the ground by 7am, so plenty of time for the kids to check him out before they left for school. Great excitement! Every bit as beautifully marked as his mother, a fine big strong fellow who found his legs (and mum’s milk) in no time.

With terrific conformation and wonderful fluid movement, he is thoroughly enjoying his new life, and the rest of the herd love to come up and admire his antics through the fence when he shows off and struts his stuff up and down the paddock, before collapsing suddenly for another sleep in the sun!

We have named him Suncrest Donizetti, and he will be offered for sale upon weaning, around March next year. He should mature at a very imposing height for a 75% Arabian, probably around 15.3, and will make an outstanding show/performance horse. With his bloodlines (his dam’s sire was the famous El Paso/Meadow View Apache, now deceased, he should also be a tempting prospect as a future sire himself.

Eddy and Zetti.
On 14th November, Silver Essence presented us with a large bundle of joy – the delightful colt foal we have named Suncrest Silver Eddy! A great big leggy foal, very bright from the start, he is the first offspring of our young stallion Suncrest Noble Aenzac (Mindari Aeniad x Naqawah) and we were thrilled to welcome him into our world!

He and his mum were introduced to the pinto pair when Eddy was only two weeks old (Zetti was six weeks), the two foals became best of buddies very quickly, and have certainly developed their athletic talents by running and playing all day long! At least their mums get some peace and quiet while the boys are off inventing games with each other.

Mezzlah and Virginia at Fremantle
Virginia and Mezzlah at Fremantle

Donizetti’s sire, Mezzlah, made a recent return to the endurance scene at the age of 16, after taking early retirement two years ago due to injury. Having sold his eldest daughter Silver Echo to an endurance stable in the UAE, Virginia was left without a qualified endurance horse, so she decided to give Mez another run and see how he went! Like the wind, is the answer!

Having kept himself well legged up in the paddock, he found 80kms at the new Fremantle ride (near Bathurst) thoroughly enjoyable. A few weeks later (20 August), he ran an easy second in the very taxing and hazardous Thursday 80km ride at Shahzada, and took out the Fittest Horse award to boot, no problem at all!

He has two more daughters in work at present, and showing great promise as they develop. Both Suncrest Naomi (ex Naqawah) and Donallagh Annika (ex Oakeleigh Park Phasaad) have just turned 6, and they have each already completed two 80km rides.

Naomi came 4th lightweight at her first ride at Oberon, and Annika (Annie) was awarded the prize for the lowest heartrate (35) at her first outing, at Coolamon. Here they are shown relaxing after their exertions!

Donna at Morrisset
“Donna” at the Morrisset Show.
Exciting new direction for the stud this year! We have decided to expand our breeding program to include Pinto Arabians, and we now have a beautiful half-arabian tobiano pinto girl included in our mare band! She certainly stands out! But she loves other horses and has fitted in very well.

Spanish Lady Niquelar (we call her "Donna") was recently purchased from Claire McKenzie in Victoria, who had raised her lovingly from a foal, and had shown her as a yearling with great success.

I had been looking for quite some time for a really good homozygous tobiano mare (that means, of course, she will only produce a tobiano foal like herself) to breed from, and they are by no means easy to find, so could hardly believe my luck when Niquelar came up for sale! We then sent her to be started under saddle at EB Lodge at East Maitland, which is run by Andrew Buckley. Andrew found her a delightful mare with great conformation and movement to burn, and agreed to show her for us. (He has since admitted too, that her good looks and striking presence spurred him on in his own quest for a homozygous tobiano stallion!)

At her first outing at Morrisset Show on 6 October she achieved a first and a Champion! She looked fantastic and behaved beautifully, even when the heavens opened and rain bucketed down. Her sire is the famous Meadow View Apache (otherwise known as El Paso), who carries the blood of the great arabian stallion Shafreyn, and her dam is the fine partbred arabian mare Delsenore Silver Leaf. Already at only 3 years old she stands over 15.2 and has great personality and presence. She loves people and always wants to be included! We succumbed to temptation and cut short her promising show career - at least for now - by bringing her home and putting her to Mezzlah in late October. She went straight in foal and so we have fingers crossed for a fine pinto baby next spring!

Suncrest Silver Echo
Suncrest Silver Echo
Suncrest Silver Echo, 7 years old, is Mezzlah's eldest daughter. She is now spelling at the farm after a very successful endurance season, her first as a qualified yellow logbook horse.

She completed 5 x 80km rides, all with great recoveries, and one (at Kiwarrak) as fittest heavyweight horse! Echo is over 15.2hh, and has a yearling full sister, Suncrest Salaam, who looks set to be just as tall and just as talented, and who will be for sale soon.

The two girls are out of our lovely foundation mare, Glenmar Silver Essence, 15hh, who was herself a fine endurance competitor.

Laura Scott & Suncrest Impulse
Laura Scott and Suncrest Impulse after
their wonderful performance at the
Luddenham show.
Word has just come in from Laura Scott’s mother about a recent show success for Laura and her lovely young horse, Suncrest Impulse (Salam Mezzlah x Springwood Iranda), purchased from us two years ago.

Laura attended the Luddenham show (28 February-1 March) on Impulse in both led and ridden events. They placed first in led gelding over 4yrs and then reserve champion. He also placed first in ridden gelding over 15hh.

This is the first show outside a pony club event they have entered so they both performed very well indeed! Congratulations to both Laura and Impy!
